The secret to a good edge is to always maintain the same angle, and that’s difficult to do by hand. This sharpener holds the knife in place and guides the sandpaper or whetstone along a rod, so the angle doesn’t change from one pass to the next.
The knife is held in place by two rubber-padded clamps and a stop on the spine, and the rod slides along a scale engraved with the blade’s height to ensure the correct angle. It uses standard sandpaper strips or 150 × 20 mm diamond stones and plates. The top of the sanding holder is flat to accommodate a digital magnetic angle gauge, which reads the actual angle to within 0.1°.
It attaches to any table surface between 12.5 and 40 mm thick using the printed clamps and is assembled using only M5 screws, an 8 mm wrench, and two Allen wrenches. 3D-printed in the workshop using PETG.
Wipe away any metal dust after sharpening, and keep the rod clean and dry. Replace the rubber pads on the clamps when they no longer grip properly.
