The hand-crank fishing reel is the simplest way to fish: the line is wound around the body, and to cast, you point the reel toward the water and let the line spool out in a cone shape. To retrieve, you wind it back in by hand. It has no rod, no crank, and nothing that can jam.
It was designed from the ground up at AF Knifeworks to carry everything in a single item. On the back, there’s a compartment with a screw-on lid and an O-ring for hooks, sinkers, and swivels. The rim features holes for inserting the hook and a groove for an elastic band that secures the line to your backpack. The lid has tabs, and the body has finger grooves, so it can be opened by hand, even with cold hands.
It holds about 40 m of 0.35 mm line, weighs 34 g without line, and fits inside the AF Knifeworks fire kit box. It is 3D-printed in the workshop using PETG, with the AF emblem on the front.
After using it in saltwater, rinse it with fresh water and let it dry with the lid open. Every so often, apply a small amount of silicone grease to the O-ring. Do not leave it in the sun inside the car.
In Portugal, you need a license to fish in inland waters. Be sure to check the local regulations before fishing.
