Terms & Conditions

Last updated: 19 October 2026

1. Who we are and our promise

Every AF Knifeworks knife, axe and sheath is made by hand, one at a time, in Portugal. These terms explain how buying from us works, what you can expect from us, and the few conditions that come from handmade work.

Our promise is simple: if something is not right, tell us and we will make it right. We would rather fix, re-sharpen, remake or refund than leave a customer unhappy.

Seller details: AF Knifeworks, operated by Arménio Ferreira, NIF 210511001, Portugal. Email: geral@afknifeworks.com. Phone: +351 932 560 617.

These terms apply to every purchase made on afknifeworks.com or arranged with us by email or message. By placing an order you accept them. Nothing here limits your statutory rights as a consumer.

2. About handmade products

No two AF Knifeworks pieces are identical. That is the point of handmade work, and it means:

These variations are not grounds for a warranty claim. A real defect in function, safety or materials always is (see section 7). If you are unsure whether something is a normal variation, send us a photo and we will tell you honestly.

3. Orders, prices and payment

An order is confirmed when we send you an order confirmation by email. Until then, we may decline an order, for example if a one-of-a-kind item has already sold.

4. Custom and made-to-order pieces

A custom piece is made to your specification: steel, blade shape, handle material, size, engraving or sheath. We agree every detail in writing before we start.

  1. Quote and design. You describe what you want; we send a written quote with specifications, price and estimated lead time. Quotes are valid for 30 days.
  2. Approval. Work starts once you approve the design and the quote. We do not ask for a deposit: payment is due when the piece is finished, before shipping.
  3. Progress updates. We send photos at key stages (forged/ground blade, handle fitted, finished piece). You can ask for small adjustments before the handle is fitted at no cost.
  4. Final approval. We send photos of the finished piece. Once you have paid, it ships.

Lead times are estimates, typically 4 to 6 weeks depending on complexity and queue. Heat treatment and natural materials sometimes need extra time. We will tell you promptly about any delay. If we are more than 4 weeks past the agreed date, you may cancel the order at no cost.

If a blade fails during making (a crack in heat treatment, a flaw in the steel), we start again at our cost. You never pay for our mistakes.

If you cancel a custom order before work begins, you pay nothing. After work has begun, we may charge the documented cost of materials bought and work already done for your piece.

Unpaid orders: if payment is not made within 30 days of the finished-piece photos, and we cannot reach you, we may sell the piece to another customer.

5. Shipping and delivery

Stock items ship within 2 working days of payment; custom pieces ship once finished and paid for. Delivery times and costs are on the Shipping page.

6. Returns and changing your mind

Stock items: 30-day return. The law gives you 14 days to cancel an online purchase without giving a reason (Decreto-Lei 24/2014). We extend this to 30 days from delivery for all stock items.

Custom and personalised pieces. Under the law (Decreto-Lei 24/2014, art. 17), the free-cancellation right does not apply to goods made to your specifications or clearly personalised, such as a custom knife or an engraved blade. Section 4 sets out what happens if you cancel a custom order.

Even so, we want you to love your piece. If a custom knife does not feel right in your hand, talk to us: we will reshape the handle, adjust the sheath or regrind the edge where this is possible, free of charge within 30 days of delivery.

Faulty or not as described. These are never treated as a change of mind; see section 7.

7. Guarantee: legal cover plus our craftsman's promise

Every piece carries the 3-year legal guarantee of conformity (Decreto-Lei 84/2021), and on top of it our own lifetime craftsmanship guarantee to the original owner.

How to claim: email us photos and a short description. If we need to see the piece, we pay return shipping for valid claims. Repairs are done within 30 days.

Not covered by the lifetime guarantee (your legal rights are unaffected):

If damage is not covered, we still offer to repair it at a fair price, quoted before any work.

8. Care and lifetime sharpening

Every piece ships with a care card. The essentials:

Free lifetime sharpening: send us any AF Knifeworks blade and we will sharpen it free of charge. You pay shipping both ways. We aim to return it within 10 working days.

9. Age, lawful use and safety

Our knives and axes are tools for bushcraft, hunting, camping and outdoor work.

Liability. We are not responsible for injury or damage caused by misuse, unsafe handling or use contrary to these terms.

10. Privacy, content, complaints and law

Privacy. We use your personal data only to process orders, deliver, provide after-sales service and answer you, under the GDPR. We never sell it. Details are in our Privacy Policy.

Our designs and photos. The AF Knifeworks name, logo, designs, photos and texts belong to us. Please do not copy or reuse them without permission; sharing photos of your own knife is always welcome.

Something wrong? Talk to us first. Email geral@afknifeworks.com and we will reply within 2 working days. Most problems are solved in one conversation.

Formal complaints. You may also use the Livro de Reclamações Eletrónico.

Alternative dispute resolution. Under Lei 144/2015, if we cannot agree, you may turn to a consumer arbitration centre:

Governing law. These terms are governed by Portuguese law. If you live in another EU country, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of your country.

Changes. We may update these terms. The version that applies to your order is the one published when you ordered.
