Privacy policy

AF Knifeworks is responsible for the personal data collected on this website. We only collect what we need to process your orders and manage your account.

What we collect

Certificate of authenticity and guarantee

When you buy a numbered knife or axe, we link the piece number (for example, AF26001) to your order and, if you have one, to your account. We do this to issue the certificate of authenticity, to let you view it in "My account" (or with your order number and email) and to manage the lifetime guarantee and free sharpening. We use your order details (name, email and order number) and the name you want shown on the certificate.

Legal basis: performance of the purchase contract and the guarantees that come with it.

This information is not public: only you can see it. If the piece changes hands and you ask us to transfer it, the new owner will see the certificate, but not your name.

We keep this record for as long as the piece's guarantee lasts, which is for the lifetime of the original owner. You can ask us to delete it at any time; in that case, to use the guarantee you will need to show the paper certificate and proof of purchase.

Product reviews

After a purchase, you can leave a review of the product. We keep the stars, the comment, the name you choose to show, the date and the order the review is linked to (so we can confirm you bought the product). The review and the chosen name are published on the website, without your email or address. Legal basis: your consent, given when you submit the review. You can withdraw it and ask for removal at any time by replying to one of our emails or through the contact form; the review is then deleted. Reviews stay published while the product or the reviews page exist, or until you ask for removal.

Review request by email

A few days after delivery, we send you a single email asking what you thought of your order. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in hearing from customers and improving our products, about a purchase you made. It is not advertising and does not sign you up to the newsletter. Every email has a link to stop receiving these requests; if you use it, we keep only your email address on an exclusion list, so that we respect your choice.

Suggestions and ideas

If you send us a suggestion for improvement or an idea for a new product through the contact form, we use your message only to reply and to improve our products. It is not published. We keep these messages for up to 2 years, or less if you ask us to delete them.

Your rights (access, rectification, erasure, objection and complaint to the supervisory authority, in Portugal the CNPD) also apply to this data, as described in the rest of this policy.

Signing in with Google

If you choose to continue with Google, we receive only your name, email address and an account identifier from Google. We do not receive your password and we do not post anything on your behalf. You can disconnect it at any time in My account.

Why we use it

To create and manage your account, process and ship orders, answer your messages, meet legal and tax obligations and, if you opt in, send the newsletter.

Newsletter

We only send news by email to people who ask for it (the "Send me news by email" box), and we keep the date you asked. To send it we use your name, email and language, through an email delivery service that processes this data only on our behalf. You can unsubscribe at any time: with the link at the end of each email or in My account.

Availability notices

If you ask to be notified when a sold-out product is available again, we keep your email, the language of the site, the product and the date of the request, only to send you one email when the product is back. We then keep the request for up to 12 months as a record and delete it after that. You can cancel the notice at any time with the link in the confirmation email. Ticking "I would also like to receive news" is a separate consent for the newsletter (see above).

Restoration and repair requests

When you ask for a restoration or repair quote, we collect your name, email, phone (optional), the description and photos of the knife and, if you choose to send it by post, your return address. We use them only to assess the knife, send you the quote, arrange delivery and return, and keep a record of the work. The photos are not published and only we can see them. We keep the request for up to 2 years after the work ends (or after the quote, if it is not accepted), unless the law requires longer for invoicing, and then delete it, photos included. You can ask us to delete it earlier.

Care reminders

If you tick "I would like to receive care reminders for my knife" at checkout, we keep the date and time you agreed and use your name, email, the order language and the knife you bought (and the name you gave it, if any) to send you, at most once a year, an email reminding you of free sharpening, about 12 months after shipping. This is a separate consent from the newsletter: you can cancel the reminders at any time with the link in each email, without affecting the newsletter. We keep a record of the reminders sent for as long as we keep the order.

Cookies

We only use the cookies needed for the site to work. They are set by this site (no third-party cookies), are not used for advertising or analytics, and are not shared with anyone. That is why we do not ask for consent: the notice at the bottom of the page is for information only.

The site does not load anything from other companies' servers (the fonts are hosted on the site itself). You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings, but without the session cookie the cart and sign-in will not work.

Visitor statistics

To know how many people visit the site and which pages and products are viewed most, we use our own counter, on our server, with no third-party services. It does not use cookies or store your IP address or any other data that identifies you: only aggregated, anonymous figures are kept (for example visits, pages viewed, device type, language and the site you came from). We do not use this data for advertising or share it with anyone. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in improving the site and the shop.

Your rights

You can access, correct or delete your data, or object to its use, by writing to geral@afknifeworks.com. See also how to delete your data. You may also complain to the Portuguese data protection authority (CNPD).
